Last summer, children explored the theme of historical arts and culture in New York City through different time periods and immigrant groups. Our Visual and Performing Arts teachers built their daily curriculum around artists and art movements that stemmed from the influx of new populations to New York, designing field trips, visual arts activities and performances that integrate this theme. Students focused on such areas as the influence of Chinese and Indian cultures on the borough of Queens and the many influences that gave birth to hip hop culture in the Bronx. During field trips, teachers led specialized hands-on workshops focusing on immigrant groups in New York through the lens of arts and culture. Through these lessons, students also learned about the importance and role of immigration in the rich history of Lenox Hill Neighborhood House.
